ETOWAH COUNTY JUNIOR HIGH MATH BEE CIPHERING GUIDELINES
REVISED MAY 31, 2012
- Each
school will have a team consisting of seven students. There will be no
substitutions during the match. Alternates are not permitted.
- At
the beginning of each match, each student will receive a packet of
answer sheets, on which he/she will compute and record his/her answers.
Each student should be sure that all information is recorded correctly
on each sheet before the match begins.
- Each problem will be projected on a screen. The time limit will be sixty seconds for each problem.
- Each
student will work the problem and record his/her answer in the box on
the answer sheet. The answer must be in final form and must be in the
answer box.
- All
answer sheets will be passed to scorers at the end of the sixty
seconds. NO answer sheets will be collected before time has expired.
- If appropriate, answers may be given as fractions (proper or improper, in simplest form), mixed numerals, or decimals.
- Commas are optional, but if used they must be used correctly.
- When the answer involved money, the dollar sign and decimal point must be used correctly.
- In
measurement problems, the answer should be expressed using the correct
unit of measure. Abbreviations or symbols must be used correctly. This
includes the appropriate units for perimeter, area, and volume.
- In
a division problem, remainders may be expressed as a whole number,
fraction, or decimal, unless the specific problem states other wise.
- When solving an equation, proportion, etc., the answer should be given in the form x = 12.
- If an answer is to be rounded, it will be specified in the instructions for that problem.
- If an answer requires a percent or degree sign, it must be used or the answer will be considered to be incorrect.
- Judges
will make every effort to read students’ answers. If a judge cannot
read an answer, it will be considered to be incorrect. The judge’s
decision is final.
- A
ciphering match will consist of no more than six questions. A total of
eight questions will be made in the event that one or more questions
must be discarded.
- The
school score for a ciphering match will consist of the total number of
correct answers from that school’s students for each round (maximum
points possible = 42; seven students X six questions).
- In
the event of a question or concern, please check with one of the host
schools. Every attempt will be made to resolve a situation as quickly
as possible.
18. In the event of ties, all teams will be awarded medals.
